The Aubrac WAy at van d ranch

Angus, Hereford, Lowline, Limousine, Brahma, Highland, and Dexter are among the most common breeds of beef cattle in the United States with black and red Angus being perhaps the most popular.
Less common breeds utilized for beef production include heritage varieties such as the Galloway, White Park, Lincoln Red, and Dutch.

Aubrac cattle, are rare in U.S. cattle operations but have been increasing in popularity over the past decade due to their versatility, hardiness, easy calving, and sweet dispositions. The most attractive trait about the Aubrac for smaller cattle operations is the excellent feed conversion, as the Aubrac does well in virtually any climate, on any type of pasture. They are not picky, gain weight and produce a heavy meaty carcass. Still, there is even more to love about this sweet breed, as their beef is incredibly tasty and arguably better than the highly sought after Angus that many prefer to other beef cuts.

Aubrac originated in France, with over 150 years of breeding history. After centuries of breeding selection by French monks, an official herdbook was opened in 1893. Aubrac bulls were bred and raised to use as oxen, and the breed was primarily used for beef. The breed's popularity saw a decline after World War II, and their most concentrated populations remain in Germany and France. Aubrac cattle were introduced in the U.S. in three separate imports, beginning in the 1970's. They are still less common than the beef breeds mentioned earlier, but this breed has progressively made a comeback as farmers and ranchers in the states have come to recognize the tremendous qualities of the Aubrac.

At Van D Ranch, we raise a small herd of Aubrac for beef production and feed them solely Colorado pasture grass--no corn finishing, no processed grain, and no growth hormones, antibiotics or additives of any kind are in our cattle's ration. This yields a lean, tender beef, that is sure to please even the most skeptical of foodies.

Contact us today for more information about Aubrac cattle. We do have limited quantities of steers available for processing and sell both half beef and full beef to Coloradoans near and far.
